Week 4 - End Of Week Interactive Exercise
In the following exercise we will identify plumes of wildfires over Russia on 2nd August 2019 using EO satellite images on Sentinel Hub.
1. Firstly, go to Sentinel Hub by clicking here, which will place you over Russia.
2. In the menu on the left hand side leave the settings as they are and click the search button then click the ‘visualise’ button on the first result in the list.
3. Set the date to 2nd August 2019. You should now see a plume of smoke in the middle of the satellite image.
4. Now, on the menu on the left-hand side, choose False Color (urban). You should now be able to see orange areas from multiple fires burning. These are wildfires in the Sakha Republic near the River Lena in Russia.
5. Have a look around and see how many fires you can spot. You can also change the date and see how the fires progressed over time.
6. For an extra view of the wildfires you can add in custom script by clicking on the custom option in the menu on the left hand side, and then click on the hand symbol on the right hand side of the menu, which will open a script box. You can find a nice custom script for wildfires here, which you can copy and paste into the script box, and then click refresh. This custom script was made by Pierre Markuse, and you can read more about it here. You will now be able to see a real colour image with areas of orange showing places with possible active fires and residual heat.
